brosco.com 5 Fire-rated doors are a critical component of building safety, especially in commercial spaces where code compliance and occupant protection are a priority. But not all fire-rated doors are the same—and understanding when you need one, what they’re made of, and how they’re installed can help you stay compliant and protected. All fire-rated doors and frames are labeled by BROSCO Boise Cascade. The specific fire rating (e.g., 20, 45, 60, 90 minutes) is determined by the building's construction and the wall it is installed in, following codes like the International Building Code (IBC) and NFPA 80. • Complete assembly: A fire-rated door is a complete system that includes the door, frame, and all hardware, such as hinges and latches. Fire-rated hardware will be UL listed. Sills, door bottoms and weatherstipping are not required to maintain fire ratings for exterior or interior doors. • Labeling: The door and frame must have a legible and permanently attached label and must be applied by BROSCO Boise Cascade. The label indicates its fire-resistance rating (e.g., 20, 45, 60 or 90 minutes). • Self-closing: Fire doors must be equipped with a self-closing mechanism (a door closer or spring hinges) to ensure they close automatically after being opened. This prevents the spread of fire. • Self latching: A fire door must have a latching device that engages when the door closes, ensuring it remains securely shut during a fire. • Clearances: The gaps between the door and frame must be within tight tolerances (e.g., 1/8 inch on the sides and top) to block the passage of flames. • Hinges: Only approved steel ball-bearing hinges that match the door's fire rating can be used. • Glass and vents: Vision panels must use fire-rated glazing, and their size is often limited by the door's rating. Fire-rated louvers are permitted on some doors but are often prohibited on those in stairwells or doors with panic hardware.
